Title

Foreign Languages, lab, circa 1965, photo 1

Description

This image shows Professor J. Roy Prince showing two students how to use the language lab in the Department of Foreign Languages at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1960s. The two students can be seen wearing headsets, and two other students are visible in the background. Programs in the Department of Foreign Languages focus on teaching students both the language and culture of a region, and includes courses in French, Spanish, Chinese, German, Arabic, Japanese, Latin, and Russian, as well as offering classes for international business and economics majors in the College of Business. The Language Lab had 54 booths with electronic attachments, where students listened to prerecorded tapes designed to enhance the student's ability to comprehend, pronounce, and speak the language.
