Title

Driver Education, circa 1975, photo 2

Description

This image shows a car driving on a wet Driver Education course at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. The Driver Education program first appeared in the Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) Bulletin in 1957-58 as a single three-hour course in the Department of Health and Physical Education that led to a certification for Driver Education teachers. The more intensive Driver Education Program started at Appalachian State in 1973 with a minimum fifteen course hours in traffic and safety instruction. The program included a driving course, computerized simulators, and special classrooms with instruments to measure reaction times, depth perception, and peripheral vision. The program was financed through the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Governor's Highway Safety Program.
