Title
Land of Oz, Beech Mountain, photo 2
Description
This image shows students performing a scene during an outdoor production of the "Wizard of Oz" at the Land of Oz stage on Beech Mountain northwestern North Carolina in the 1970s. The Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy, and Scarecrow can be seen standing on stage while the audience is in the foreground. The Land of Oz was a Wizard of Oz theme park that operated between 1970 and 1980. It included character houses, a yellow brick road, and a balloon lift. The park closed in 1980 and left vacant until being purchased in 1990 by Emerald Mountain Development. Now primarily rental property, every year an Autumn at Oz festival is held for the public, including music, hay rides, exhibits, and performances.
