Camp Broadstone, tug-of-war, photo 1

This image shows students holding onto a rope and preparing for a game of tug-of-war at Camp Broadstone in Valle Crucis, NC, in the 1970s. Two counselors can be seen standing on the left. Camp Broadstone was purchased by the State of North Carolina, Watauga County, and the newly formed Appalachian School Camp, Inc., in 1961 for ten dollars. Appalachian School Camp, Inc., was formed to manage the property as an education tool for elementary and high school students, as well as to provide teaching experience in an outdoor setting. Camp Broadstone is a multi-use facility run by the the Office of Conferences and Institutes at Appalachian State University (1967-current).
