Title

Driver Education, circa 1965

Description

This image shows three people in a car during a Driver Education course at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) in the 1960s. Jack Groce, assistant director of Recreation and assistant coach of Football, can be seen sitting behind the wheel. A woman is sitting in the passenger seat, and another man is standing outside the car, holding a sheet of paper titled, "Behind the Wheel." The Driver Education program first appeared in the Appalachian State Bulletin in 1957-58 as a single three-hour course in the Department of Health and Physical Education that led to a certification for Driver Education teachers. The more intensive Driver Education Program started at Appalachian State in 1973 with a minimum fifteen course hours in traffic and safety instruction.
