Description
This image shows students walking up a hill with cafeteria trays used for sledding after a snowstorm at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in January 1980. Sledding was a common pastime for students, using materials including sleds, inner tubes, and trays taken from the cafeteria. By 1991, an average of 7,500 trays were being stolen by students, most immediately after snowstorms, costing the University around $60,000 a year. Appalachian State then began selling roll-up sleds as a cheaper and safer alternative for students.
