Board of Trustees, circa 1961, tour, photo 1

Description

This image shows President William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969) taking the Board of Trustees of Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) on a tour of campus in the early 1960s. Plemmons can be seen standing in the center. The Women's Gymnasium, built 1924, is visible in the background, and Welborn Cafeteria, built 1925, is on the right. The Board of Trustees has been a governing body of the College since it became a state-sponsored institution in 1903. The Board of Trustees was formed of members representing regional areas of Western North Carolina and managed Appalachian policies, finances, and development until 1971, when it became part of the University of North Carolina system. It now oversees Appalachian State under the University of North Carolina system's Board of Governors. On the far left is Mr. William Rankins. Second from the far right is Mr. Ralph Winkler.
