This image shows James D. Rankin, dean of College, and David Barnard Dougherty, vice-president, at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967). David Dougherty, seen standing on the right, was business manager from 1938 until 1955, and vice-president from 1955 to 1965. James D. Rankin, seen standing second from the right, served as a professor of English at Appalachian State from 1921 to 1929, and became dean of the college in 1929, serving in this capacity until June 1955. He served as interim president after Blanford Barnard Dougherty retired in June 1955, and retired September 1, 1955. Two other men are seen standing on the left.
