Description

This image shows Professor Frank Bruno in the Department of Special Education in the College of Learning and Human Development at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in May 1972. He is seen sitting in front of a television at a desk, demonstrating devices for the handicapped to students preparing to intern at the Western Carolina Center. The Department of Special Education is now the Department of Language, Reading and Exceptionalities in the College of Education, and it includes undergraduate work in communication disorders and special education, and graduate work in communication disorders, reading education, and special education. Western Carolina Center is located in Morganton, NC, and has been an intermediate care facility for the mentally handicapped in western North Carolina since 1963. The Center also provides research and training opportunities for college and university faculty and students.
