This image shows North Carolina Senator Samuel Ervin speaking behind a podium to the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. Ervin served in the U. S. Senate from 1954 to 1974. The Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice is in the College of Arts and Sciences and offers a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science, a pre-professional Legal Studies major, and a graduate program leading to Master of Arts in Political Science, Master of Public Administration, and Master of Science in Criminal Justice & Criminology degrees. This image appears in the 1987 Rhododendron (p. 133). Seated on he platform is Dr. Richter Moore, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Political Science.
