This image shows former president William Howard Plemmons (1955-1969) and Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) speaking with representatives from a U. S. Department of Energy exhibit sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in 1977. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is in the College of Arts and Sciences and maintains the Rankin Science Observatory in Rankin Science Hall, built 1963, and the Dark Sky Observatory, opened 1981, twenty miles northeast of Boone, NC. The Department offers an undergraduate degrees in applied physics and graduate degrees in engineering physics, as well as courses in industrial, chemical, computational, environmental, medical, and radiation safety physics. Partially obscured on the far right is Mr. Bob Snead, Vice Chancellor for Development and Public Affairs. To his left is Mr. Bob Bumgarner, President of Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative. To Mr. Bumgarner left is Chancellor Wey, and to his left is President Emeritus Plemmons.
