Description
This image shows a sign displaying distances in the metric system at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in December 1975. The sign includes the names of various towns in Tennessee and North Carolina and their distances from Boone in kilometers. It was located on HWY US-321 by the baseball field on the southeast corner of campus. The metric system was being promoted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences during the mid-1970s. The Department maintains the Rankin Science Observatory in Rankin Science Hall, built 1963, and the Dark Sky Observatory, opened 1981, twenty miles northeast of Boone, NC. The Department offers an undergraduate degrees in applied physics and graduate degrees in engineering physics, as well as courses in industrial, chemical, computational, environmental, medical, and radiation safety physics.
