Description
This image shows students setting up a homemade telescope constructed for a class in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1960s. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is in the College of Arts and Sciences and maintains the Rankin Science Observatory in Rankin Science Hall, built 1963, and the Dark Sky Observatory, opened 1981, twenty miles northeast of Boone, NC. The Department offers an undergraduate degrees in applied physics and graduate degrees in engineering physics, as well as courses in industrial, chemical, computational, environmental, medical, and radiation safety physics. as well as courses in industrial, chemical, computational, environmental, medical, and radiation safety physics. On the far left is Dr. Walter Connolly, Professor of Physics. Third from the left is Dr. Robert Nicklin, Professor of Physics.
