This image shows Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey (1969-1979) and Major General George B. Pickett standing beside a trophy display in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. The sign reads, "The Warrior of the Pacific, 1972, National ROTC Rifle Team Championship presented to Chancellor Herbert Walter Wey, Appalachian State University, by Major General George B. Pickett Jr., 18 Dec. 72." The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
