Description
This image shows a man and a woman fastening epaulettes onto the uniform of a cadet being commissioning ceremony held by the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. The cadets were being commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army after completing the ROTC program. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
