This image shows a Christmas celebration held by the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. Department Chairman William Palmer can be seen standing on a stage, speaking into a microphone, while members of a band stand around him. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard.
