This image shows a wet cadet standing beside a pool holding a rifle during a course in military tactics in the Department of Military Science at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. Three faculty members are seen standing on the left. The Department began in the fall of 1969 and houses the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). It is located in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and offers two-year programs in leadership and military training with no obligation of future military service, and an additional two-year program that results in a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve or the Army National Guard. Standing in between the two military officers is Dr. Ole Larson (Professor of Health,Physical Education and Recreation).
