This image shows History Professor George Antone, standing on the right, speaking with Dr. Harry Lee Swint during a conference titled "Institute on the Negro in American History," held at Appalachian State University (1967-current) during the summer of 1969. The federally-sponsored institute focused on the presence of the African-American in American history and included speakers such as scholars Claude Brown, Bell Irvin Wiley, George B. Thomas, Henry Lee Swint, Daniel Woodard, and Darwin T. Turner. It was directed by Appalachian State History Professor George Antone and followed with another conference titled, "Teaching Black History," which focused on integrating African-American history into history curriculums.
