This image shows Professor Jack Callahan, Professor Fred Webb on the right, and a third man in the Department of Geology at Appalachian State University (1967-current) looking at a slab of granite in the 1970s. Framed pictures of buildings are lining the walls in the background. The Department of Geology began in 1949. It emphasizes the scientific principles of geology and preparing students to be professional geologists and teachers. It is the only Bachelor of Science program that results in an Earth Science Teaching certification in North Carolina.
