This image shows a man giving a cultural performance on a stage in Farthing Auditorium, built 1974, during the Foreign Language Day celebration held by the Department of Foreign Languages in the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1970s. He is seen dressed in a miniskirt, a tank top, a striped bandana, and sandals, with feathers in knee-high socks. Programs in the Department of Foreign Languages focus on teaching students both the language and culture of a region, and includes courses in French, Spanish, Chinese, German, Arabic, Japanese, Latin, and Russian, as well as offering classes for international business and economics majors in the College of Business.
