CONFERENCE
April 16 - 18 -Rosemont, IL
The UAHC has a wide range of congregation
sizes in its membership. The conduct of Temple
affairs can be quite different between the large
congregations found in metropolitan areas and
the smaller congregations found in smaller communities. The Small Congregations Conference
gives us the opportunity to discuss Temple issues with other congregations that arc of similar
size. Past participants say that this is the most
infonnative and beneficial of the UAHC conferences for our congregation. AH Temple members arc welcome and encouraged to ancnd.
Please contact Lonnie or Ed Fide/man if you
wish to attend or need funhcr information on
registration. By notifying Ed Fide/man, you can
be designated as a delegate from our congregation. This will give you voting privileges, as

OUR VERY OwN ELll.ABETB GERGEL
At the Friday ~venin& Shabbat service on
February 26•. C.iizabeth Gergel, cellist, will be
accompanied by Anna Wittstruck on the cello.
Diana Gergel, guitarist. will be accompanied by
Anna Wittstruc/c, Abby Lind (violin), and Alex
Nightingale (violin). Diana will also play a few
solo pieces on classical guitar. All musicians
have been trained in the Suzuki method. Please
join us for some chamber music played by the
youth of our fair city.
I attended the Midwinter
Conference of the Guild of
Temple Musicians January
16-18 in Northbrook, Il... What an incredible
experience! Cantonal soloists, organists, Jewish music educators, composers, and even a few
spouses of the same came together for a long
weekend of education, worship, and an examination of issues facing temple/synagogue musicians now and for the future.
One of the highlights of the event was having
Ben Steinberg of Toronto, Ontario in anendance. He is, without question, the "dean" of
composers of music for Jewish worship (you all
know the "Shalom Rav" we sing). He was very
candid in his views of cum:nt musical "fads"
and highly critical of the UAHC leadership's
position on worship music for temples. Very
thought-provoking, indeed. I have known Ben
for many years. and this was a terrific opportu·
nity to hear from one of the greatest of Jewish
composers about the "State o f Jewish Music."
Our morning and afternoon worship services
were magnificent, musically speaking. Can you
imagine a congregation of cantors, soloists and
other music professionals singing together? The
four-part harmonies WCT'C absolutely delicious!
I hope to have a chance to present more about
the conference to you soon.
Shalom,
- David Cohen

This is the story of Zelophehad's daughters in the Book ofNumbers.
In April we will discuss Jewish views on abortion and in May the status of women in Israeli
society.
All are welcome - bring a lunch. Discussion is based on "Women Living the Challenge", the
Hadassah study guide.

Mystjcism Jbroumme Kab\>Jllah taught by Rabbi Shmuel Bfmham. (Rabbi Ratntr will be on Sabbatical.)
The cost of this Eldcrhostel program for local participants is $200. !his includes the following: participation in all Elderhostel programs during this week, all lunches and all dinners during this week
(housing and breakfasts llrC not included). All activities will take place at the Best Western Hotel
in downtown Asheville.

WNC J£WJSH COUNCIL ON AGING
- VOUJNl'EJ:RS NtCD[D
We are moving forward with planning for an elder day program at the JCC as well as a variety o
other services for our elders. We arc already compiling a list of volunteers who want to make a
difference and help with a many of these programs. There is a sign-up sheet on the Temple, Shul and
JCC bulletin boards. Or call Alison at 253-1979 or Marlene at the JCC st 253-070 I. Join us!
We arc hopeful that this Spring we may receive some grant money from local agencies. We also
continue to look for major start-up funds from individuals in the Jewish community. Of course
contributions of any siz:e arc welcome!
We'll be announcing a date for our next Council meeting as well as a community-wide m~ting on the
issues of aging. In addition, Alison is available to answer yolD' questions and provide resource
information on aging. And watch for your survey to arrive t.o help us gather information about your
needs.

Aaron Demsky
Professor of biblical history at Bar-Han University, Israel

Thursday,,Feb. 11, 1999
Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall
UNCAcampus
A native of Brooklyn, Aaron Demsky immigrated tO Israel in 1965. He received his Ph.D. from Hebrew Univenity, and is
professor of biblical hi.nory and director of the Project for the Study of Jewish Names at Bar-llan Unlvenity. His article on
the oldest known Hebrew inscription-which he decipherecHappeared in Biblic.al Archtology &ww. He will discllS.1 this
anicle and his ~ant work during his tal.lc at UNCA.
"In 1996, in the final season of the 13·yearexcavation of Tel Miqnc in Israel, excavaton discovered a monumental inscription that is surely one of the most sensational finds of the 1990s," Demsky writes. "I believe that the Inscription is dedi·
catcd to Potn~. the generic 'divine mUt:rca' whose title may in this case refer to the Canaanite goddess Ashcrah.•
Thus begins Demsky's story about this sign~t discovery and what it tells us about the acculturation of the Philistines
into local Canaanite &OCicty.

Thanks for the gift and the lift you gave us . These pledges and the higher duos pr omised b;y all

You know tha t our prayers lway~ beg for Scholem . I am

Dear Son Harry , Your Wife and Children , may you live to
a r ipe old age .
Amen .
I rec eived your letter and your check , De ar Son , on
the evening of our Fortieth ' Anni versary .

wi th Blessings and Thanks , would they but be able to write
themselves .
But I , with my inborn spirit t o g i ve and not to take •••
am unable to utter proper thanks for what others give me .
Therefore you must only guess my g ratitude . It is the
same that my Mother of blessed memory knew when I was a
baby . My silence was (to her) a true symbol of my happiness
and g ratitude .
I wi sh· for you, Dear Son , that you too , may reach your
Fortieth Anniversary and that your children may , then give
expr ession of their noblest se ntiments . Under those
circumstances you too will unde r stand the happiness of
parents when childr en display noble traits towards them •••
This from me your well wishing Father, G. Finkelstein ,
and your Mothe r, Sara Rifka Finkelstein .
