<p>Biographical Note. Isaac Garfield Greer (4 December 1881 - 24 November 1967) was a history and government professor for Appalachian State Teacher's College from 1910 to 1932. A native of Watauga County, North Carolina, he was born to Philip and Mary Greer of Zionville and initially worked as a public school teacher and principal until he was hired at Appalachian State Teacher's College. From 1932 to 1948, he worked as superintendent of Mills Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville, North Carolina. From 1948 to 1954, Greer was the Executive Vice-President of the Business Foundation of North Carolina. Greer and his first wife Willie Spainhour had two sons I.G. Greer, Jr. and Joseph P. Greer. Greer's second wife was Hattie O'Briant. Dr. Greer was an avid collector and singer of folk songs. He was a nationally recognized authority of mountain folk music during his lifetime. A bass player, Greer and his wife, who played the dulcimer, performed at various regional school and civic functions. They were recorded singing several folk songs by Library of Congress from 1941 to 1946. Appalachian State Teacher's College dedicated the I.G. Greer Music Hall in 1966. Greer also had an active civic life. Just Going Down to the Gate.
My sweet heart's a shy little fairy.
Her age is just seventeen.
Her parents say she is too airy,
But a sweeter girl never was seen.
At night she steals out from the cottage
Her mother calls after her: Kate,
She answers: Dear Ma, I am not going far,
I'm just going down to the gate.
Chorus:
Just going down to the gate, dear Ma,
Just down to the old garden gate.
The moon is so bright, it's such a nice night,
I'm just going down to the gate.
Of course, at the gate I am wai/ntig,
And sweet are the words that we say,
While within, the old folks are debating
As to when thay shall move in May.
Sometimes thay call gently for Katie.
She answers: Dear Ma, 'tis not late.
There's no sign of storm and the night is so arm
I love to stand here at the gate.
They say she's too young to be married,
But with them we do not agree.
Love's message to Katie I carried.
A kiss was the answer for me.
We'll wander along in the moonlight.
Much longer I'm sure I can't wait.
Some night by-and-by to a preacher we'll fly
When Katie comes down to the gate.
