Dear Friends,
This month we print our last issue of
the ·center of Things", our JCC
newsletter. This publication has been
part of our local landscape for many
years, and its retirement marks the end
of an era. We (the staff, the board, and
committees who want to get the word

out for events) have recognized for
Julius Blum
Arlene Doloboff quite some time that as an advertising/

marketing tool, the newsletter didn't

Art Green
one extra flyer for every program (more

if we were depending on a big turnout)

because the newsletter never seemed

to remind anybody where to be, let
Barbara Pasternack
alone when, all by itself.

There's no doubt that this reflects the

pace of our lives- do we call them
overbooked or admit that they border

our old modus operandi had become

Under this kind of scrutiny, the newsletter just didn't make the cut. We will
continue to communicate via e-mail
and post upcoming events at Congregation Beth Israel and Temple Beth Ha
Tephila. If you are a JCC member you
will continue to be notified of the
programs designed for you. ryYe are
going to carefully code our mailing list
so you'll receive mailings by category,
i.e. seniors, family, etc.) If you are not
a JCC member, $50.00 will purchase a
year's worth of JCC mailings.
As with all changes, even th e sensible
and positive, there is loss. My earliest
JCC memories include watching Penny
cut and paste this bulletin and the
hours that staff and seniors spent
hand-collating the copies when they
came back from the print shop. (No
desktop publishing or machine collating
a decade ago.) For the past six years,
I've 'talked' to y'all every month through
this newsletter, celebrating our best
moments together and commiserating
over our worst. Whether I was telling
you, chapter by chapter, th e story of
how this new Center came to be,
inviting everyone to Amy's Bat Mitzvah,
or just sharing my top ten reasons for
loving the Chanukah dinner, I've
treasured this connection with you.
Being loathe to totally give it up, you
may find shorter communications from
me worked into our other publications
from lime to time.
And some things, mercifully, will never
change. So I'll see everyone at dusk
on Sunday, December 13th to light the
first Chanukah candle together just like
we always do.
Til then, Shalom,
/"\-.~

We are changing the way we publicize JCC
events. The cost of mass mailings is very high,
and in an effort to reduce JCC expnses will be
separating our mailing list into categories: youth,
seniors, families, etc.
If you are a JCC member, you will continue to
receive flyers for the programming designed for
you.
If you are not a JCC member, and would like to be
on our specialized mailing list, the fee is $50/year.
Please call 253-0701 and let Penny know that you
are interested in receiving news from the Center.
Thanks for your cooperation.

This is our last chance to give you an update about the great activities that
we have planned. So far, we've had some really fun meetings, but we are
hoping to have a better turnout in the future.
Our next meeting will be on Dec. 2nd which will be our Hanukah party. Be
sure to bring stuffed animals to contribute to less fortunate children. We
will also be having a special guest, our new regional director of Young
Judaea. We would like to see all of you there!

Dec 2- Hanukah Dinner- bring stuffed animals for charity. JCC 7 pm
Dec 13- JCC Hanukah dinner
We took a group of ten energetic
chamorim to the Fall Young
Judaea Convention at our usual
site. Camp Colby, outside of
Birmingham. AL, the weekend of
October 23-25. We slept (to
some degree) in cabins together,
attended services. made new
friends, (the kids are great
minglers) and ate and benched
together. Great programming by
the older Bogrim, including our
own Rene Breadon, was presented on issues relating to aliyah
to Israel. We/you have a great
group of kids and they're a pleasure to spend a weekend with.
On November 8, Michelle Gregory
came to the JCC to speak to us
about the international language
of Esperanto (created by Dr.
Ludwig L.Zamenhof, a Jewish
citizen of Bialystock in 1887). We
all studied the simple grammar
rules of Esperanto, learned many
important words/nouns (like the
always useful word 'wonderbra ')
and listened to Michelle speak the
language. After a grueling one
hour study session, we went to
the Hop for ice cream and played
both indoor and outdoor kickball.
A fine outing with a tie in to Hebrew and its origins in 20111 century
as well.

All the lunatics of God: Jewish Poets of the 20th Century
You've got to be a bit crazy to be a Jew in Asheville, right? If you've ever
felt like you were just a little out of sync with the rest of Asheville. the
rest of the world, then you have something in common with Emma Lazarus,
Allen Ginsberg, Muriel Rukeyser, Yehuda Amichai, Gerald Stem, Robert Pinsky
and Enid Shomer, just a few of the poets whose poems we'll read and discuss
as we celebrate ourselves, the lunatics of God, and the work of some of the
century's most delightful and inspiring Jewish poets.
