in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for
Women.

Appalachian is in the cenrer of the most popular yearround recrearion area in the East There are sports and
cultural activities for every season of the year. Locared
in the Blue Ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. the
area is both rural and urban. both agricultural and industrial - but still relatively undeveloped and unspoiled The Blue Ridge Parkway is approximately six
miles from campus. Within a half-hour's drive from the
campus are several ski slopes. golf courses. major
tourist attractions. the Appalachian Trail and Pisgah

9. Ch.pe Wilson H.II, formerly Appalachian High
School, houses the departments of theatre, anthropology
and sociology as well as a theatre which seats 640 persons. Part of the College of Continuing Education is also
housed here as well as next door at 206 Appalachian
Street.

and has an auditorium which seats 600 persons.
19. V•rslty Gymnulum, which seats 8,000, is connected
to the old Broome-Klrk gymnasium which now houses the
department of health, physical education and recreation.
Registration for fall, spring and summer semesters also is
held in Varsity Gym.

biology, physics, geology, geography as well as an
observatory.
1 t. Belk Ubr..-y, presently under expansion. houses
some 325,000 volumes which will increase to 600,000
when the addition is completed. Also located in the library
is the Appalachian Collection of regional artifacts. Beside
Belk Is the old D. D. Dougherty Library ( 13) which now
houses the General College and department of military
science.
8. Edwin Dunun H.il houses the College of Leaming
and Human Development with its departments of administration, supervision and higher education: counselor

education and research; educational media; elementary,
secondary, reading and special education. The Octagon
beside the main building haS an auditorium which seats
some 160 persons.
33. B. B. Dougherty Admlnlstr•tlon BuUdlng houses the
offices of information, admissions, registrar, graduate
school, controller, student affairs. academic and business
affairs and the office of the chancellor.
46. The Center for Continuing Eduutlon Is located at
the top of the new west campus. The Center contains
some 70,000 square feet, with 21 multipurpose meeting
rooms (including a small auditorium), a library, and exhibition areas. It provides complete living accommodations for
guests, with 9 1 bedrooms, a restaurant and coffee shop.
12. Smlth·Wrtght H.il, one of the oldest buildings now
standing on campus, houses the department of psychology.
16. Plemmons Student Union, near the center of
campus, also is the center of activity with its post office,
meeting rooms, TV lounges, game room, bowling alley,
mini-theatre, ice cream parlor and Gold Room cafeteria
(the main cafeteria is "'er~ the mall from the student
union).
27. Ullle Shull Dougherty Holli houses the department of
home economics beside Which is the Brock Nursery

College of Arts and Sciences, as well as the departments of

44. F•rthlng Audltortum was completed in 197 4 and
seats some 1,800 persons. The lobby area, or Farthing Gallery, serves as exhibition space for ASU art students and
faculty, the Appalachian National Drawing Competition and
for other area and traveling art exhibits.
47. Herbert W. Wey HAii, recently was dedicated to Dr.
Wey who served the university as chancellor from 19691979. Wey Hall houses the office of the dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and the radio station, WASU,
also is housed in this building as Is the campus educational
TV station.
48. John A. WAiker HAii houses the College of Business
with its departments of accounting; business education
and office administration; economics; management and
marketing; and finance, insurance and real estate.
43. Winkler ff.ii is one of 15 residence halls on campus
housing some 4,000 students. The residence halls are
situated on both the east and west sides of campus.
t4. Whitener HAii, once Appalachian Elementary School,
houses the departments of history, political science and
criminal justice and the office of Information (computer)
systems. Whitener Hall has an auditorium which seats 644
persons.
