MARY'8 DEATH
Thou lingering star, with deepening ray,
That lovest to greet ih e early morn,
Again thou usherest in the day,
My Mary from my soul was torn.
0 Mary! q.ear departed shade!
Where is thy :place ~f blissful rest?
See'st thou thy lover l~wly laid?
Hearest thc>U the gr~ans that rend his breast?
That sacred hour can I forget,
Can I f~rget the hallowed fl,r'Jve,
Where by the winding Ays we met,
T'J live 'Jne day of :parting love!
Eternity will not efface,
Those records near 'Jf transports :past;
Thy image at 'JUr last embrace!
Ah! 'little thougbt"
we it was our last!
Ays gurgling kissed his :pebbled shore,
Over hung with wild w'J'Jds thickening grew;
The fragrant birch and hawthorn hoar,
Twined am'Jr'Jus round the raptured scene.
The fl'Jwers sprang want'Jn to "be :prest,
The "birds sang l'Jve 'Jn every spray;
Till too; t'J'J S'J'Jn the glowing west,
Pr::>claimed the speed 'Jf winged day.
Still over these scenes my memory wakes,
And fond.ly oro'Jds with miser cares;
Time out the impression deeper makes,
As streams their channels deeper wear.
My Mary, dear departed shade!
Where is thy "blessful :place of rest;
See'st thou thy lover lowly laid?
Hearest thou the groans that rends his ore/Elt?
