Mary's Dream
The moon had climbed the highest hill,
Which rises over the source of day;
And from the eastern summit shed,
Her silver light on town and hay;
When Mary laid her down to sleep,
Her thoughts on Sandy far at sea;
When soft and low as voice she heard,
Saying, Mary, weep no more for me.
She from her pillow gently raised.
Her head, to ask who there might be;
She saw young Sandy shivering stand,
With pallid cheek and hallow eye!
Oh! Mary, dear, cold is my clay,
It lies beneath the stormy sea;
Far, far from thee I sleep in death,
So, Mary, weep no more for me.
Three stormy nights and stormy da.ys,
We tossed upon the raging main;
And long we strove our bark to save,
But all our striving was in vain;
Even then, when horror chilled my blood,

An account of the resource
<p>The I. G. Greer Folksong Collection, presented here as part of the Documenting Appalachia digital initiative, consists of approximately 1,100 document pages that comprise more than 300 individual song titles, some with as many as ten distinct variants. The documents in this collection include manuscripts (some written as early as the mid-19th century), typescript transcriptions produced by Dr. Greer’s secretarial staff, and handwritten musical notations. Songs represented herein range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.</p>
<p>Biographical Note. Isaac Garfield Greer (4 December 1881 - 24 November 1967) was a history and government professor for Appalachian State Teacher's College from 1910 to 1932. A native of Watauga County, North Carolina, he was born to Philip and Mary Greer of Zionville and initially worked as a public school teacher and principal until he was hired at Appalachian State Teacher's College. From 1932 to 1948, he worked as superintendent of Mills Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville, North Carolina. From 1948 to 1954, Greer was the Executive Vice-President of the Business Foundation of North Carolina. Greer and his first wife Willie Spainhour had two sons I.G. Greer, Jr. and Joseph P. Greer. Greer's second wife was Hattie O'Briant. Dr. Greer was an avid collector and singer of folk songs. He was a nationally recognized authority of mountain folk music during his lifetime. A bass player, Greer and his wife, who played the dulcimer, performed at various regional school and civic functions. They were recorded singing several folk songs by Library of Congress from 1941 to 1946. Appalachian State Teacher's College dedicated the I.G. Greer Music Hall in 1966. Greer also had an active civic life. He was the president of the Southern Appalachian Historical Association and also served as a Boone City Alderman and in the North Carolina House of Representatives.</p>
