About Appalachian ...
With education as its birthright and instruction as it primary mission , Appalachian State University i a university for today, addressing the need for a well-educated and knowledgeable population . Appalachian's 11 ,000 students learn in a friendly, stimulating environment. In addition to
diplomas, our graduates take with them a !ove and appreciation for learning that continues
throughout their lives.
Founded in 1899 as Watauga Academy, Appalachian soon evolved into a state teacher's college,
later broadened its purpose to include the liberal arts, and became a part of the consolidated
University of orth Carolina in 1972. From its beginnings as a small local institution, Appalachian has grown to meet the needs of the state and region . Throughout its rapid growth the
university has consistently maintained a student-centered environment and has been responsive to
the changing needs of its con tituency.
Appalachian is a comp rehensive university, offering some 130 academic m ajors at th e baccalaureate level and over 70 academic majors at the ma ter 's and intermediate levels. To prepare a
diver e constituency for productive lives in society, the university provides each student with a
well-rounded liberal ed ucation and opportunity to participate in a wide range of educational experiences and professional programs.

friends, a place to remember, a place to visit and long for later,
a place of great beauty and a place to wonder and contemplate.
Surrounded by the softness of the Blue Ridge mountains, encased in verdant lushness and sprinkled with colorful flowers in
summer ablaze with the orange, yellows and reds of fall, dressed .
in dazzling white in winter and bursting with new life in spring,
Appalachian glows with each season. It's an exciting place where
people are challenged, expo ed to new ideas and cultural events.
It s a place where people grow, create and are infused with
anticipation.
ABOUT APPALACHIAN ...
With education as its birthright and instruction as its primary mission, Appalachian
tate University is a university for today, addressing the need for a well-educated and
knowledgeable population. Appalachian's 11,000 students learn in a friendly, stimulating
environment. In addition to diplomas, our graduates take with them a love and appreciation for learning that continues throughout their lives.
Founded in 1899 as Watauga Academy, Appalachian soon evolved into a state teacher's
college, later broadened its purpose to include the liberal arts, and became a part of the
consolidated University of North Carolina in 1972. From its beginnings as a small local
in titution, Appalachian ha grown to meet the needs of the state and region.
Throughout its rapid growth the university has consistently maintained a studentcentered environment and has been responsive to the changing needs of its constituency.
Appalachian is a comprehensive university, offering some 130 academic majors at the
baccalaureate level and over 70 academic majors at the master's and intermediate levels.
To prepare a diverse constituency for productive lives in society, the university provides
each student with a well-rounded liberal education and opportunity to participate in a
wide range of educational experiences and professional programs.
