History of the World

A native of Massachusetts, Carol Icard has lived in Landrum, South Carolina for the last four years. Her education includes three years at Northeastern University's School of nursing in the 1960's, followed by marriage, family and a career in professional crafts. She studied with numerous nationally known art professionals and in the 1990's returned to formal education at Berkshire Community College. Carol was awarded high honors with her Associate of Visual Arts Degree in 1996, and then traveled to Tuscany to study Book and Paper Art with Paola Princivalli Conti

Award winning artist Ruth Haak Colby expresses her vision through the medium of pastel. She prefers pastels for their versatility, immediacy and rich vibrant color. She is one of 10 finalists internationally in a landscape competition sponsored by Pastel Artist International magazine. Ruth has received sixteen awards for her pastels during the past five years, including four first place awards. She holds signature membership in the Southeastern Pastel Society.

Michael Morel was a senior Music Industry Studies major at Appalachian State University. He is a musician, painter, and photographer and has been shooting for nearly a decade. His work has been seen in galleries as well as in print and online around the world. Most recently, his photography has been featured in the BBC's Photographer of the Year competition 2005.

Natalie received a degree in Industrial Technology with a concentration in Technical Photography in May, 2006 from Appalachian State University. She minored in both Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology and Media Studies. Natalie is a native of Morganton, North Carolina.

After graduation, Frances Denton worked for an architect until she went to the University of Virginia where she received her Masters of Architecture. She was persuaded to try teaching as a career and became an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Nebraska.

Dee grew up in Stokes County, North Carolina. She began painting as a hobby in 1971 and taking art classes. Dee's work has been in many local, regional, and national juried art competitions with awards from first place to honorable mentions.

Pat's prints have been in many competitive exhibitions. Just recently she had a print accepted into the Boston Printmakers 2005 North American Print Biennial. Pat's background includes many years as a graphic designer and artist. She received a B.S. degree from the University of Georgia with a major in graphic design. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, and has lived in North Carolina for the past 24 years.

Graduated from Southwestern At Memphis (now Rhodes College) with a BA in Communication Arts. His work drew media attention as it won awards, first locally, then regionally and nationally.

Comes from the National Heritage Collectors Society which is headed by David Spellerberg. The Society is located in Westlake Village, California. Artist, De L'Esprie attended California State University, Northridge and completed her degrees at Loyola University in Montreal. She first studied counseling and then business before turning to sculpture. Believing she could not make ends meet with art alone, De L'Esprie thought her business and counselling degrees would open doors to more lucrative employment. But then she realized her artwork was paying her way through university and could sustain her afterwards. After obtaining her degrees, she attended Brandis Art Institute taking both private and group classes over the course of four years.

Campbell has had several awards and grants, both for her individual art work and as a curator, from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York State United University Professors and the North Carolina Arts Council.

Joe Deutsch is a resident of western Pennsylvania but more importantly is a summer resident of Boone, North Carolina. He has been painting for about 3 years and is, for the most part, self taught with the exception of some help from his wife of 45 years, Mary Ruth who is an accomplished artist. Great White Wave

"My life and art are co-conspirators." On Christmas, 2004, as M Mueller sat sketching quilt ideas in his sketchbook, pictures of the Pacific tsunamis came onto the television. In short course, the pattern he was devising at the time reduced itself to the simplest of its elements -the asymmetrical and curvaceous square spiral driving the composition of "A Great White Wave." M has been a Foscoe resident since 2004.
Exam Time

Dr. Robert Lysiak was born on the lower east side of New York City and raised on Long Island. He holds a Ph. D. in Middle English Language and Literature and taught medieval literature and linguistics in the English Department at Appalachian from 1973 until his retirement in 2004. He has been painting in watercolor for over 20 years. His successful group and solo shows, popular workshops and demonstrations have earned him regional acclaim. His pieces are hung in personal and corporate collections internationally.

Noyes Capehart Long (he paints and writes under the name of Noyes Capehart) was a faculty member in the Art Department at Appalachian State University from 1969 until his retirement in December 1997. Noyes Capehart's work was featured in the October 1995 issues of American Artist Magazine, and his works have been shown in national galleries and museums.

Kent Ambler is a painter, printmaker and sculptor. Kent has been exhibiting his work continuously since graduating from Ball State in 1992 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. His work has been included in over 60 exhibitions, as well as 15 solo exhibitions. His work can be found in over 250 private and corporate collections.

Ms. Oppenheimer graduated from The University of Hartford Art School, CT, cum laude, with a double major in Art and English Literature. She taught art for three years in the East Lyme, Connecuit Public School System. During that time, she attended several art schools concentrating on illustration and sculpture.

Jean Hirons is a full time pastel artist, living in Rockville, Maryland. She received her BFA from Marietta College, Ohio and a masters in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island. She was a librarian for 30 years, the last 20 at the Library of Congress. She took early retirement in 2003 to pursue pastels full time.

Aurora Pope attended the University of Georgia where she received a degree in Anthropology in 1989. In 2006 she was working toward an MFA in Studio Art at East Tennessee State University. Her work has been selected and shown during many juried competitions.

Blue Trees

Marni Goldshlag made her first quilt in 1975, but didn't become seriously interested in the quilt as an art form until 1995. She has won awards in local quilt shows. Her work has been exhibited in international quilt shows, she's had one and two person shows, and has been juried into many group exhibitions. Marni has had many different careers ranging from college instructor in theatre to special education teacher to computer programmer to artist.
