The Board of Trustees have been a governing body of the College since it became a state-sponsored institution in 1903. The Board of Trustees was formed of members representing regional areas of Western North Carolina and managed Appalachian policies, finances, and development until 1971, when it became part of the University of North Carolina system. It now oversees Appalachian State under the University System's Board of Governors.

Blanton taught in the Department of Education from 1956 to 1958 before leaving to serve as principal of Appalachian High School from 1958-1964. D. D. Dougherty Library served as the main library until Belk Library opened in 1969. The stairs were removed and a new entrance was added to the building in 1960.

Framed plaques with pictures of Conrad Stadium were presented to Alfred Adams and James March, leaders of the Watauga County Heartline campaign to raise local funds for construction of the stadium. Conrad Stadium replaced College Field, located approximately at the current location of Rankin Science Hall, and was dedicated to William J. Conrad, head of the Board of Trustees.

Adams and March were leaders of the Watauga County Heartline campaign to raise local funds for construction of the stadium and were presented with plaques and footballs during the ceremony.
