Carpenter of the Department of Biology at Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) standing outside Smith-Wright Hall, built 1940, in January 1960. Professor John Frank Randall taught at Appalachian State from 1957 until retirement in 1989. The Department of Biology aimed to provide cultural background in life sciences, prepare biology teachers, and train biologists, and included courses on animal observation, zoology, and graduate classes in animal ecology. It is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and maintains a greenhouse, a herbarium, and several land tracts located on and off campus.

The Language Lab had 54 booths with electronic attachments, where students listened to prerecorded tapes designed to enhance the student's ability to comprehend, pronounce, and speak the language.

Plemmons had served various educational posts with the University of North Carolina since 1941, and was executive secretary of the North Carolina State Education Commission for three years. He took over the post from interim president J. D. Rankin, who retired in September 1955, and served as Appalachian president until his retirement. He died in 1984.
